Biography of NBA Player Emeka Okafor
The Charlotte Bobcats are very fortunate to have one of basketball’s most renown athletes, Emeka Okafor. Okafor attended Ballaire High School, and his tremendous efforts that he demonstrated throughout his high school basketball career would earn him a spot on the University of Connecticut roster. What many do not know about Okafor is that aside from his sensational skills on the basketball court, he served as an honors student throughout most of his college tenure.
Emeka Okafor primarily played center and power forward. His numbers in the post were solid, both defensively and offensively. As one of the University of Connecticut’s finest athletes, Okafor would go on to become the Huskies all-time leader in blocked shots with 441. This feat was aside from the numerous NCAA honors that he received. During his last year of college basketball, he was named Big East Player of the Year, a tremendous accomplishment. The NCAA coaches also realized his defensive presence down low when they awarded him with the National Defensive Player of the Year award. It soon became eminent that Emeka Okafor was deserving of a spot on a professional basketball roster.
In 2004, Emeka Okafor entered the 2004 NBA draft. He was selected second overall by the Charlotte Bobcats. During is rookie season he put up fifteen points per game to go with almost eleven rebounds. His rookie season went down as one of his most memorable, as Okafor managed to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award. What’s even more fascinating is the fact that he beat out his former college teammate and roommate, Ben Gordon. Growing to become one of the game’s most thrilling post players, Okafor showed that he could make an impact.
After his rookie year it was unfortunate that Emeka Okafor suffered in a sophomore slump. However, his basketball career managed to pick up again during the 2006-2007 season, when he posted numbers similar to his rookie year. Today he is one of basketball’s most respected athletes. In addition to the Rookie of the Year honors he received, Okafor also earned a Bronze medal with Team USA during the 2004 Summer Olympics. Clearly, Okafor has established a notable reputation throughout the National Basketball Association.
